Can you use personal lubricants to clean your Guitar Strings?

I was wondering if I could use some personal lube to clean my guitar strings or guitar nuts. I’m curious to see if this works or damages the guitar.

About the only thing it will do is make your guitar sticky. Depending on your finish and lube, you might get some spotting.

The best thing to clean your strings is WD-40 on a rag. Spray it on the rag, not the strings, place half of it it under the strings, fold the other half over the top, and move up and down the strings. You’ll get a fair amount of gunk of your strings if you haven’t ever cleaned them before.

You don’t really need to clean your nut, but putting some graphite or Graph-all lube on it is helpful (no, your lube doesn’t work here either).

Ernie Ball also makes string cleaning wipes if you like convenience.
